Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

This post was updated on .
Here are some interesting photos that were recently posted on Facebook by Rob Whitlam.  They were taken a month prior to filming the first episode of UFO, and shows the original UFO Moonbase commander actor, Franco Derosa.  This actor was fired shortly into filming the first episode, and his scenes were refilmed with Gabrielle Drake in charge.

All of the women in these photos ended up appearing in UFO, though.

Hi Marc

Thanks for uploading the pic. I wonder who the blonde girl standing next to Shakira is (her name doesn't appear in the article that accompanies the picture)?  I also wonder what magazine did the the article & picture come from?

It's always great to see pictures of Gabrielle Drake without the purple wig. I am glad that Franco left the production in the end as I prefer to see Gabrielle Drake in the more extended role of Moonbase commander (and Gay Ellis is my favourite character in UFO :)

That's Rosemary Donnelly, who did appear in UFO as an operative in SHADO HQ.  I think she may have had only had one line, "Here's your coffee, Keith".  :-)

Hi Marc

Thanks for your reply
Like I said in my post about the flaws in the UFO series, they really should have focused a bit more on the female members of SHADO and devote some whole episodes to them (like Gay Ellis, Ayshea & Rosemary Donnelly & Virginia Lake).  They definitely could have improved the US ratings which would have led to a 2nd season of UFO  :(

Have just been watching "A Hole In Babylon" (1979) on the BBC iplayer - one of the repeats currently being shown on BBC4 to celebrate the anniversary of 'Play For Today'. The film deals with the real-life Spaghetti House Siege. I hadn't realised 'til the end credits came up that Franco Derosa plays one of the hostages in the film.

Oh what a wonderful treat these test images are, Mark. Great to see such images, showing the moonbasegirls and others, prior to the show kicking off. Glad they put Gabby (Lt G Ellis) in Derosa's place - as I probably would not have continued watching so avidly from its initial UK airing, if he had been MB commander.
Always raises the heart-rate a tad when new photos of UFO appear like this (have to admit Lt Ellis is also my favourite character - wonder why?!?) and re-kindle the whole experience off again.
Got them on Ebay? Wow! What a find...
More please!!!

Hi there

Yes I agree Lt Gay Ellis is also my favourite UFO character. And it is always great to see her without the purple wig (not that she doesn't look great with it on). It is a pity she was missing from the last few episodes of UFO as I think her absence would have definitely hurt the show's ratings (as much as Col Lake looks lovely she is not quite the same as Lt Gay Ellis :)

Re: Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

I was in contact with a guy on the now dying art website Deviantart who actually interviewed Col Lake, or Wanda V, some years ago, and he suggested, without going into detail, that Wanda wasn't too enamoured with the moonbasegirls (the actresses) in the sense that they were somewhat of a different class to her?!? I think they were possibly a tad more feisty than she, possibly considering their previous acting backgrounds etc, but I will add that Wanda V back then was an astonishingly stunning actress, woman, person, her, she, and so on - who it has been suggested was meant to replace the look and feel of Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds fame, but in human form, during the transition from puppets to actors.
I'm not complaining in any sense though - as the show made my day back in those heady times.

Hi there

Thanks for your post. You know what it makes sense what you said that Wanda V was cast in UFO on the basis that she looks a bit like the human incarnation of lady Penelope from Thunderbirds (I can really see the similarity). Its a pity they didn't cast her as a series regular much earlier on in the show (replacing Alec Freeman who always seemed to me a bit 'out-of-place' for UFO). Its a pity that Wanda dod not get on with the other actresses. Was it because they thought Wanda was too posh (or vice versa) because all the girls in UFO seem (to me anyway) as being of an upper-class RADA-esque background (which there is nothing wrong with that of course :)

Re: Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

My DA contact clearly did not wish to go deeper into these suggestions, even though I thought I might try harder to dig the truth from him, being that he got my mind boggling, and anything that invites me into MORE UFO and or moonbasegirls history the more I am satisfied. She wasn't overly impressed with or by them - was the main part of his thrust, and I let it rest at that. We never saw her (Lake) wearing the usual control room or casual outfits to my recollection, and I wonder if these outfits were a tad too risky for her, fearing being tagged as a saucy actor and not a serious actor?!? She was a Colonel though, and maybe Colonel's always wear trousers?!? I know Gabby was in quite a few saucy movies etc during her earlier years, so who knows. Makes the mind boggle...

Hi there

Thanks for your reply. I suppose the profession of acting is just like any other job there is always rivalry & jealousy going on in the background. At least it didn't affect the solid performances that all the actresses delivered on the show. It's a pity that Wanda & Gabrielle Drake never directly worked together on UFO. I am sure they would have had great chemistry onscreen together. I must remind myself to check out Gabrielle's other movies in 70s. I have heard that she appears in a lot of sex comedies in the early 70s (and apparently she even appears nude  in at least one of them). It would be cool if she donned a purple wig in one of them for a laugh :)

BTW - what does DA actually stand for ?

Re: Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

DA stands for Deviantart... I had hatched together around 1300 plates or images in the form of a very long comic strip of sorts based around the girls of Moonbase, and adding Dr Who themes - with Daleks on/in Moonbase - using the CGI format. A guy I got to know on the early CGI sites around 15-years ago responded to my request of anyone able to put together a face morph for Lt Ellis I could use on my CGI characters, and not only did someone eventually create the most amazing likeness of Ellis, but also went on to create the Moonbase control room and personal cabins and ALL the outfits, wigs, space craft, etc to go with this, and much more. All usable in the CGI world. Unfortunately the once thriving art site/forum started making very bizarre changes and updates, on a monthly bases at times, at start of 2020, and LOTS of folk there began leaving, finding the new formats un-workable. So all the peeps who had found great interest in my Girls of Moonbase comic strip were leaving. What many noticed was that there was a sudden flood of radical left wing spouters or trolls invading the site and especially the forum and its threads, and adding fake news and dodgy left leaning links, clearly to do with the coming elections last year. I blamed DA for turning lefty woke leaning - and they haven't argued elsewise...

Gabby Drake: She appeared in the 1970s in television series The Brothers and UFO. In the early 1970s she appeared in several erotic roles on screen. She later took parts in soap operas Crossroads and Coronation Street. She has also had a stage career.

Yeah I got this off Google, there's quite a lot of movies and many saucy ones, including Au Pair Girls. I guess Ms Drake had the bod for these parts?!?

Still waiting for the elusive UFO movie: though I'll wager they muck it up - and go woke and broke it...

Hi Paramount

Thanks for your post. This comic strip you mentioned (with all the CGI elements added by your friend) sounds really amazing. It would be great to see it. Do you have any links to it?

It is a shame that parties with political interests would try and 'shanghai' various media fansites (it really is a 'sign of the times' I suppose :(.  BTW - I didn't know about there being a new UFO movie being in the works (To be honest Anderson should have made a CGI-animated continuation of UFO in 2000 instead of Captain Scarlett imho).  Do you have any more info on this new UFO movie?

This post was updated on .
It was a comic strip in the form of around 1300 CGI rendered images using a software package called Poser 6... Took a few years to gradually build, and add to Deviantart (the deviant bit isn't bad deviant in nature - more different, many, as in forms) as interested DA members grew more and more interested, oddly enough more from female followers than guys, who I would on occasion sway the originally intended direction of plot to fit in with any ideas they had themselves. The story is only in files on my system right now, as I removed the content on DA when it started destroying itself at commencement of 2020 year in the direction of (left wing) politics and not art.
I'll try to add a few full plates here, but I don't know if this will work, and it might just be a tad feisty for the members!!! And if they do manage to appear here: do feel free to delete them...
The UFO movie idea has been going around for some years now, and probably has been talked about in detail on these boards. So nothing really new in that department.
Yes the DA going far left leaning probably was in similar vein as with many orgs and corps and even museums nowadays, in that funding keep streaming in (SOROS etc) to popularise anything that goes against western democracy views: and I'll leave the politics right there on this thread...

Hi Paramount

Thanks for your reply. And thanks for posting images of your UFO strip. It looks absolutely amazing. I really like your rendering of the lovely Lt Ellis (you should get an animation award for that alone imho :).
It is great to see Lt Ellis in action once again, I felt that her departure from the show in the last few episodes really hurt it.
I also really like your rendering of the Interceptor craft. You know, from looking at your amazing CGI work, it really is a pity that Gerry Anderson did not opt for a UFO continuation instead of producing the Capt Scarlett CGI-animated show.  I was wondering how many panels did you create for this strip (and are there more than this one strip etc)?. I would love to see the rest of the strip(s). Maybe if you cannot post it in this forum you could try and post it in the fanfic section of the Shado Library etc.  Better still you could even post the strip on Youtube in a slideshow format (that would be the nearest to the UFO animated series we never got).

But thanks once again for posting this. It really is an amazing piece of work :)

Re: Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

Shado-cabinet...

That's OK and with pleasure S-c... Yes several guys who I got to know in the CGI world about 10 or so years ago worked on all the morphing figures (for a CGI DAZ studio character called V4.2 - or Vicky) for getting the Lieutenant Gay Ellis face and figure morphs (CGI shapes, adjustments to turn V4 into Lt Ellis) while another couple of guys worked on the outfits, and the Shado facility figures and props, while I simply supplied them with the 50 or so images of everything UFO and Ellis and especially the outfits at them, to use to create the CGI world of UFO... I simply tweaked things like make-ups, additional outfit materials, and added outfits and props and anything else required for the story from my own collected Poser friendly libraries, of which are vast... I did work really hard on getting the lighting and lighting qualities and adjustments and placements/positions to make the absolute best of all these features with, what was even back then, ageing software and limited computer memory etc...
I have a (very) short cyclic walking animation - which is a tad jumpy - of one of the outfits some of the gals of 'my' Moonbase wear/wore in my story - I'll try adding this here, but I know it wouldn't load into the Deviantart platform, so it might not appear. Also, where is this Shado Library option?!? I guess, with some time, I COULD start trying out part of the 1200 or more panels (like these ones - although their original full size is around three times what I could get to open here on this SHADO forum) but I might have to 'adjust' a few for general viewing, as some of the female members who got very interested in the story as it unfolded on DA started getting bolder and bolder with their suggestions, and I happily tagged along with them, up until a point.
The interceptors, as with Moonbase from outside, and also I have Sky 1, the sub it comes from and also the lunar lander and the craft that takes it through earth's atmosphere (sorry I forgot their names) were created by a guy many, many years ago, as free items to have and to hold.
But all the scenes have been created totally by myself, including the various lighting and any special effects, often using basic aged software...
Yes so once again there are 1200 or so panels around three times larger than this for the whole story - which really gets plot diversion crazy (used to drive the DA guys mad with so many sub plots) after awhile.
I got blocked from YouTube for asking questions to a certain group of people who were claiming to be directly descended from the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt... (yeah I know - take a big breath) and thus they were suggesting they were owed what they were calling reparations to the tune of trillions in compensation for their African ancestors being '''robbed''' of the treasures of ancient Egypt... All I did was asked for some facts, details, maybe some info on their DNA (as I had studied ancient Egypt in some detail) etc... And YouTube claimed I was using hate speech!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Crazy world these days - that was about 2-years ago...
I can't find an option to add the animation - so I'll leave that for now.
At some point soon I'll delete the images I've added here - as this is someone else's thread!!!
Let us know about the Fiction Library though - where it is to be located?
And thanks for your kind comments...

Re: Franco Derosa, original UFO Moonbase Commander

Hi Paramount

Thank you for your reply, it really was interesting to read about the amazing but hard work that went into making this strip (as per your moniker I think you should be working directly for the studios in the movie business imho :). You sound like you have great organisational & creative skills to be an executive producer.

I think 1200 panels would be more than enough for a large graphic novel. It would be amazing to see the strip regardless of is size (the examples you included here look amazing, I would love to see how the other characters are depicted ie: Straker, the aliens etc).

The SHADO library that I spoke of is a a fan site that allows UFO fans to contribute their fanfic etc :

https://www.shadolibrary.org/library/index.shtml

I have been reading some of the excellent fanfic on this site (I even wrote a review for 'UFO - How it all ended' on this forum). I really think you submit your excellent strip (or at least a few pages of it) to this site.  I am even surprised that you have not submitted your strip to the Fanderson club. I am pretty sure they would have use for it (ie: they could either sell it to UFO fans on your behalf or provide it as downloadable content to new members when they subscribe to the Fanderson club etc).

Your excellent strip should definitely see the 'light of day' imho, it definitely shouldn't be kept away from the UFO fanbase.  Sorry to hear you got some grief from some crazy youtubers just because you were doing research (descendents of the Pharoahs? Really? Did they not know that the ancient Egyptians completely died out centuries ago leaving no descendants LOL). YouTube can really be haven for creative talent like yourself (and an asylum for crazy people like the 'pharoah gang' - LOL). Anyway I would not be discouraged by people like them I think you should look into uploading your strips onto Youtube etc.

BTW - pls don't take down your images from the thread. I don't think anyone would object to you posting your excellent work on this forum (in fact I think you should create a new thread on this forum and upload some images from your strip for the UFO fans to enjoy)

Also I do not think you need to censor the more 'adult-orientated' content from your strips (I mean all UFO fans are adults anyway. I do not think anyone would be offended imho).

BTW - I am curious as to know what the female UFO fans suggested you put in the strip that was so risque?

But thanks again for showing us your excellent work. I really hope to see the rest of the strip someday whether its uploaded here, or the SHADO Library, or even YouTube :)
